CAVE ART for all TK-5th

Imagine a world with no tv, video games, stores, or cell phones. We will explore the art of the Lascaux caves. From as long as we can remember people have been using art to tell stories. They would put their picture stories onto the only paper they had, the wall.

1. Watch the short video on Cave Art 101.

2. With the help of a parent, use a wet tea bag and use it paint a white piece of paper brown. Set out to dry. If a tea bag is not available, use brown colored watercolor, or lightly cover a picture with a brown crayon.

3: Holding the paper down with one hand, tear the edges of your paper to create a jagged edge.

4. Use black, brown, yellow, orange, or reds to create a picture that tells a story. It can be about anything. Example: the time you went to take your family pet on a walk, the birds you saw in your tree, your family sitting together talking, etc. Remember, Cave art is often used with mostly lines. *A dot that takes a walk* this is the one project, stick figures are a-okay!

5. Crumple your art into a ball. After, undo your crumpled art and flatten again so that you can see the creases in your paper.

6. Have your family make their own stories just like you! Or make many different stories.

7. THE BEST PART! MAKE A CAVE! Using pillows, chairs, blankets, construct a fort.

8. Tape your work to the ceiling or walls of your fort.

9. Bring in flashlights, your favorite snacks, and your family to tell your stories of your cave art. Have everyone take their turn sharing their story.
